01Definition
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is the independent Commonwealth Government body that enforces and administers the Corporations Act and other financial services legislation. ASIC regulates financial advisers, fund managers, credit licensees, listed companies, and the integrity of financial markets.
03Why it matters
ASIC issues the AFSLs, sets the Regulatory Guides that codify expected conduct, and inspects licensees for compliance. ASIC also operates the Reportable Situations regime, the IDR data collection (RG 271), and the financial services dispute resolution backbone.
