Cashflow modelling

Will the money last? Answer it at the desk, then put it in the SoA.

BackPro’s Modelling projects a client’s super, tax, Age Pension, aged care and bad years in the market, year by year, from their own file. Open it from any client record, with no SoA started. When you advise, the same model goes into the SoA.

Two ways in

From the client record, or inside the SoA.

Modelling · Open in Modelling on any client

Model a client any time.

Before the first recommendation, at an annual review, or when a client asks “what if?”. Nothing here creates an advice record, and nothing is saved until you save it.

  • Filled from the client’s record, which you confirm
  • Work through it step by step, or see everything on one page
  • Save scenarios and come back to them
  • Show it to the client, or export a summary
SoA generator · step 5, Cashflow & Charts

Put it in the advice.

Choose to include cashflow projections and they become an appendix to the SoA. Start from scratch, or import a scenario you saved in Modelling.

  • Current position against your recommended strategy
  • Key results, charts and a year-by-year table
  • Every assumption listed with its source
  • A warning in the SoA where the client file was incomplete
How it works

From the client file to the SoA, in three steps.

1. filled from the client file

Prefill the retirement model from this client’s extracted data and net-worth snapshot, then confirm or correct each section.

Re-fill from client file
  • ✓Household2 people
  • ✓Superannuation3 accounts
  • ✓Assets & investment portfolio$286,000
  • ✓Insurance3 covers
  • ✓Spending plan$78,000 a year

1 item the client file didn’t state: No home value found.

BackPro fills the model from the fact find and the client’s net-worth record. You confirm or correct each section, and it tells you what the file didn’t say.

Chance of the money lasting

86%

1,000 simulated markets

BackPro runs the plan through 1,000 simulated markets, or up to 2,000, around your own return assumptions. The market swings come from Treasury’s Retirement Income Review, Vanguard’s figures by risk profile, or your firm’s own.

Also in Modelling

For the years after the advice, not just before it.

  • Goals

    Every goal against the plan.

What the client has, what it becomes, what they wanted, the gap, and what closes it, in one table. Goals that are falling behind are counted on the tab.

  • Plan vs actual

    The advice, a year on.

The projection the advice gave, set against the positions recorded since. BackPro shows the gap and does not guess the cause, because two figures a year apart cannot tell markets from spending.

  • Over time

Where the money goes, each year.

One picture of where a year’s money comes from and goes to. It makes the year they stop work easy to see: salary falls away and drawdowns take its place.

  • Saved scenarios

    Keep the versions you discussed.

Save a scenario, compare it with the others, and bring it into the SoA when you advise. Unsaved changes survive a refresh, and you are asked before anything is restored.

What it models

The whole household, in one model.

One or two people, year by year for up to 60 years. Pick the kind of client and BackPro shows the inputs that matter, with the rest a click away.

Numbers you can stand behind

Every year has to add up, or it stays out of the SoA.

For every year, BackPro checks that what the client ended with equals what they started with, plus what came in, minus what went out. If any year is out by more than a dollar, the projection is not added to the SoA.

YearStart+ Came in− Went out= End
2031–32$1,054,200$96,300$88,900$1,061,600✓ adds up
2032–33$1,061,600$97,800$91,400$1,068,000✓ adds up
2033–34$1,068,000$99,100$104,700$1,062,400✓ adds up

Illustration. The check runs on every year of every projection.

It tells you what to look at.

  • A goal has no date, or its date falls outside the projection
  • The projection ends before the client retires
  • An area is modelled that the scope of advice leaves out
  • An assumption differs from the firm’s
  • The Age Pension figures have been indexed since they were last confirmed

Your firm’s view, set once.

Set the returns, inflation and market swings your firm uses in Firm assumptions, and every adviser starts from them. An adviser can change them for one client, and the projection notes where they differ. A saved scenario keeps the view it was run on.

Questions, answered.

Yes. The modelling screen, the meeting view and the SoA appendix all run on one model, so the figures you show the client are the figures in the advice.

From the fact find and the client’s net-worth record in BackPro. You confirm or correct each section, and BackPro lists anything the file did not say. You can also enter or change any figure yourself.

Tax, super and Age Pension rates are BackPro’s, each with its date and source, and the projection warns you when the Age Pension figures have been indexed since they were last confirmed. Returns, inflation and market swings are your firm’s to set once, in Firm assumptions.

On screen you choose. The client meeting view always shows today’s dollars. The exported documents show future dollars and say so.

No. It projects what the strategy you choose would do. The recommendation, the judgement and the sign-off stay with you.
