APRA — Australian Prudential Regulation Authority

The prudential regulator of the Australian financial services industry, overseeing banks, insurers, and superannuation funds.

01Definition

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is the Commonwealth statutory authority responsible for the prudential supervision of authorised deposit-taking institutions, general and life insurers, and superannuation funds. APRA issues Prudential Standards (the CPS and SPS series) that set the operational floor for risk management, capital adequacy, and governance.

03Why it matters

APRA’s Prudential Standards — CPS 230, CPS 234, CPS 220, and the corresponding SPS series for superannuation — are the regulatory perimeter for operational risk, information security, and governance in Australian financial services.
